Popular Mugiithi artist Dick Munyonyi was pronounced dead on Saturday, January 6.
Philanthropist Karangu Wa Muraya initially shared the news of his demise.
The artists rose to fame through his popular song known as ‘Firirinda.’
Before his demise, the artist had battled an illness and depended on financial aid to clear some of the expenses.
This showed his troubled last moments despite being a renowned Mugithi artist.
Just hours before Munyonyi’s passing, Karangu had appealed to fans for financial assistance, urging them to contribute to transfer the ailing artist to a facility with an intensive care unit (ICU).
In a Facebook post, Karangu wrote:
“Morning friends, our friend Dick Munyonyi, who is currently admitted at Gatundu Hospital, is in critical condition. Doctors have advised them to transfer him to a facility with an ICU. They need at least 100k for the deposit, and the family has told me they don’t have.
I have sent my 10k, and I know we can save the life of this man. Please send whatever you have.”
Despite the collective efforts and contributions, Munyonyi’s condition worsened, and he succumbed to his illness.
Dick Munyonyi’s musical journey began in 1971, and he reached a pinnacle in 1989 when he had the honour of performing at retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s wedding.
Unfortunately, his career took a downturn after the release of ‘Firirinda’ due to tuberculosis.
