Mediamax Journalist Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki, who was shot thrice by police officers in Nakuru during anti-government protests in July, has revealed that her life is in danger.
Kariuki has been receiving threats due to her determination to get justice following the shooting incident that left her nursing injuries on her thigh.
“The person’s intention might be to make me drop the case because as a human being being especially as woman, I will be afraid. If a man calls me threatening me, I will be afraid to leave the house and I am living alone.
“Secondly am worried about my family. If that person can’t reach me, he can go after my family incase he knows there whereabouts. I’m so worried,” she said.
Due to the threats, Wanjeri says she has contemplated dropping the case but she doesn’t want to let down those who have stood by her since the shooting.
“I have contemplated leaving the case so that the person can stop pursuing me but the back up I have received from the Nakuru Journalists Association, they have been pushing the case as I recuperated in hospital, they are the ones who have been following up with IPOA.
“As an individual, I had focused on healing but if I drop the case, I would be letting down those who have been holding me. We know the case is known and has a lot of weight,” Wanjeri said.
She added that she was received well at the Nakuru Central Police station where she reported the matter.
“The lady wasn’t resistant to take my statement simply because I was shot by a police officer. I wrote my OB well and she told me to wait for an investigative police officer to be assigned my case,” she said.
