Lawyer and socialite Corazon Kwamboka recently suffered from depression and it was so bad that she got hospitalized.
The mother of two has however come out to condemn those who bashed or laughed at her over the condition because they thought she was being ‘petty’.
Through an Instagram post, Kwamboka said that she had wanted the matter to be private but it somehow found its way to the blogs.
“Recently I went through a traumatic experience that saw me in hospital for a couple of days. This matter that was meant to be private somehow found its way into the blogs, I’m glad it did because now I can be open and talk about it, maybe even get more people like me to seek help,” she wrote.
According to her, judging from the comments she received after her hospitalization went public, Kenyans are still behind when it comes to mental health awareness.
“Would you laugh at someone who’s suffering from Malaria or cancer? Would you tell them man up? Why then is it that depression taken as such a joke. What is so funny about someone going through it?” she posed.
Kwamboka added it does not matter whether you are educated, have money or beautiful, you can still go into depression.
“It’s about time we spot this gossip and immaturity and take mental health seriously. When someone tell you they’re going through something stop automatically assuming they want sympathy or attention. Listen to them, take it seriously, you may just save a life,” she said.
She however said that she was not seeking sympathy or help as she is getting professional help but she wanted people to know that depression is a very serious thing and is not the same as being sad.
“It’s literally something that affects your brain, stops you from seeing any good in your life. And if you’re depressed please seek help. DON’T GIVE UP. There is always 1 person who loves you unconditionally and is willing to listen to you. And if you can, seek professional help. IT WON’T ALWAYS BE DARK,” Kwamboka said.
