Pastor Pius Muiru’s mother Grace Wangari was enjoying her sunset years when she was brutally killed by her own daughter-in-law and a watchman.
The body of pastor Muiru’s mother was discovered in a shallow grave in her homestead in Kigumo, Murang’a County on the night of March 20th 2017.
Wangari’s watchman Ezekiel Saitambua led detectives to the shallow grave in the woman’s compound where he dumped the body after killing her.
Saitambua was arrested after the 75-year-old woman went missing prompting police to spring into action to trace her.
The watchman and Monica Muthoni (daughter-in-law to pastor Pius Muiru’s mother) were the first to be questioned by police because they lived with the old woman in her compound.
Saitambua and Muthoni claimed they didn’t know her whereabouts and her phone was off. Safaricom helped in solving the puzzle – police traced a sim card belonging to the old woman and was located in the homestead.
An ambush was made on the night of March 22nd. Saitambua was found in possession of the phone and after interrogation, he confessed to the murder and took investigators to the shallow grave.
Saitambua told detectives that he conspired with Muthoni to kill pastor Pius’ mother. Police later established that they murdered the old woman because she discovered their illicit affair.
Muthoni and Saitambua killed the septuagenarian after she learnt they had a sexual affair and was about to convene a family meeting to discuss it.
The two lovebirds remained within the walled homestead and over time struck a friendship that saw them fall deeply in love.
Muthoni took advantage of her husband’s busy schedule and because the children were often in school, they had all the time to sin.
When the secret was out and more details were about to spiral out, they conspired to eliminate the person who would make pastor Muiru sack the watchman and probably have Muthoni kicked out of her matrimonial home.
Days before they killed the old woman, they poisoned one of her cows. The intention was that where the animal would be buried, they would inter Wangari there so nobody would question the foul smell emanating from grave.
Even though Muthoni and Saitambua were in love and even committed murder for the sake of their love, the watchman was also seeing another woman.
Detectives established that Saitambua was secretly dating another woman who lived in the nearby Mariira town. Some items belonging to pastor Muiru’s mother, including bedding and gas cylinders were discovered in this woman’s house.
