Police boss Hilary Mutyambai has ordered all police officers in the country to enforce President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directives to contain the coronavirus.
In a memo issued on Thursday, the Inspector General said the National Police Service will closely work with National Government Administrative officers and county government to ensure total compliance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Health.
“All police officers across the country have been instructed to enforce the Covid-19 protocols and regulations in strict compliance with the rule of law,” the IG said.
Mutyambai’s directive comes a day after the President asked Kenyans to follow the guidelines since they were meant to curb the further spread of the virus in the country.
Mutyambai also directed the police officers to ensure that the 10 pm-4 am curfew period is followed with fear or favor.
The IG further asked Kenyans to wear face masks, keep social distance while in public areas as well as avoid unnecessary travel.
Mutyambai asked bar and restaurant owners to ensure they close by 9 pm as directed by the President.
He further noted that the police will assist counties to close down restaurants or shops which will not follow the guidelines.

The new directive comes after the IG said any member of the public found in public places not wearing a face mask will be fined Sh20,000.
“Being in public without a mask attracts a fine of Sh20,000,” Mutyambai said.
He, however, said his officers were to enforce these guidelines within the law, and none of them was allowed to use excessive force while implementing the directive.
