Zora actress Jackie Matubia who played the role of Nana has opened up on her journey into the acting industry.
Jackie entered the entertainment industry after landing a role in Tahidi High, a local show that was being aired on Citizen TVÂ from 2006.
Speaking during the Cook and Reveal show hosted by Diana Marua, she said that her acting began way back while she was still in high school.
As fate would have it, the Tahidi High crew visited their school, and that is how she got lucky.
“Mine started back in high school, I remember the Tahidi team came to our school, at the time I was in form four. When the entire school was asked who was going to pray for us and introduce people, people mentioned my name,” Jackie narrated.
“Funny enough since form one, they used to call me Jackie celeb. I prayed and introduced the teachers and then we did our play and I remember, Miss Morgan, after that she gave me her number saying when I am done with school I should call her,” she added.
She however lost the contact and never called Miss Morgan after completing her high school. As luck would have it, Jackie got connected with Miss Morgan once again through a radio programme.
“Back in the day around 2009/2008, there was one famous radio station that used to…you call you sing and win a thousand shillings. One day I called and I performed. It is not like I know how to sing, it’s just that the people we were competing with didn’t know the lyrics but I knew. Destiny as we call it, Miss Morgan was also listening to the same station. She called the station and asked can, I get her number,” Jackie said.
Jackie was then called to go for auditions at Tahidi High but that did not happen.
“I went to auditions and the producer looked at me and just told me to go get a uniform. I did not audition. That was straight from high school after finishing school in November, December I started working,” she said.
Things were not easy at the beginning as she was not part of the main cast and with other extra characters, they had to come up with tricks so that they could be noticed on camera.
“It was hard at first because there were somehow big shots. You had to make your skirt in a particular manner so that when you pass by you tell your mother that was me. For two years, your face is not shown, we were extras. When the big shots left, we became the next big shots,” Jackie said.
