Kenyan-Mexican actress Lupita Nyong’o has hailed Kenyans who boldly took to the streets to protest against the contentious Finance Bill 2024.
In a social media post, Lupita thanked Kenyans for their efforts to defend their democratic rights.
“I salute the Kenyan youth and I am grateful to them for coming together in an extra ordinary way to stand up against the problematic Finance Bill 2024 as well as to defend and promote the democratic rights of the Kenyan people,” she said.
The Kisumu governor’s went ahead to express her sympathies to the families of those who lost their loved ones in the protests.
She further hoped that the government would listen to the concerns the young people were voicing.
“I am extremely saddened that lives have been lost in the process and my thoughts are with the victims’ families. May the government of Kenya aim to peacefully unify the nation by hearing and addressing the concerns about the governance that are rightfully being raised. #RejectFinanceBill2024,” she said.
While addressing the nation after the protests that turned tragic, President William Ruto referred to the protests as treasonous events, vowing that the government will provide a response.
He put on notice planners and financers of the protests, adding that security infrastructures, aimed the Republic and its Sovereignty, will be deployed to ensure that the country is secure and normalcy returns.
“I shall continue to lead a government that is fully committed to maintaining the integrity of our state, promoting unity of our nation and enhancing peace and security of all citizens and their livelihoods,” he said.
