Garissa Township MP Aden Duale has officially resigned as a Member of the National Assembly after the House approved his appointment as the Cabinet Secretary for Defense.
In his resignation speech, Duale urged the lawmakers to help guarantee the independence of the Judiciary and other independent institutions.
He asked MPs to do all they can to ensure that the arm of the government has operational and financial autonomy.
“We have seen what a captured justice system can do. Let us restore faith in our Judiciary. You have seen what his Excellency President William Ruto has done to that end, let’s support him,” Duale said.
At the same time, Duale admitted to having innocently participated in making laws that interfered with the independent institutions.
“On a related note, let’s also keep our independent institutions independent. Don’t make laws that will hobble these institutions. I naively did that at some point but I have since learnt how costly it is to the people of this country and even to parliament,” the soon-to-be CS said.
He urged lawmakers to revisit the laws in question and remake them in the spirit of the constitution.
He further asked lawmakers not to abandon those who elected them to parliament. He told them to focus on delivering their mandate to the people.
“When you got elected, you made a pact with your people. You had an agenda with your constituency after the elections, and many of you have realized your party also had an agenda, the media also has its agenda. If you are not careful, you may end up abandoning your people. Don’t abandon your people, don’t switch off your phones, don’t disappear from the constituency you were elected to help solve problems,” Duale said.
