“I Didn’t Ask For It” Edwin Sifuna Rejects Pay Rise As Proposed By SRC

Date:

As Kenyans take to the streeets to protests against the government, officials in both the county and national government have received a pay rice as of July 2024.

The salary increment was published in a gazette notice in August 2023, and it took effect from July 1, 2024.

In the revised salaries, Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi pay was increased by Kshs33,000 from Kshs 957,000 to Kshs990,000.

Also those whose salaries increased with the Kshs33,000 are the head of Public Service Felix Koskei and Mercy Wanjau, secretary to the cabinet.

This has not sat well with Kenyans who are condemning the increase  which has come at a time when Kenyans are on the streets demanding for change and budget cuts to lessen tax payer’s burden.

“It’s a betrayal to Kenyans for salaries & other benefits of state officers to be increased at this point in time when there’s agitation for the same to be reduced. We can’t always take Kenyans for fools. Reduce, not increase. That’s what Kenyans are demanding!!!” Millicent Omanga said.

Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna on the other hand rejected the pay rise saying that he doesn’t need it.

“The SRC is proposing to add me 14k on my salary. I didn’t ask for it. I don’t need it. It’s still money, in a country where many have no income, but for perspective I pay close to 300k in income tax every month. I will not fight for 14k extra when the whole country is saying we need to lessen taxpayer burden. I don’t want this 14k. Ikae,” he said.
