Peter Gatonye famously known as Pipi Pili is a Kenyan musician who dropped bangers such as Mpaka Che, Morale, Kamata dem among others.
The artist however went underground leaving Kenyans wondering where he had disappeared to after such success in the music industry.
Speaking to YouTuber Mungai Eve, Pili Pili said that he has never left music but admitted to have taken a little break in releasing new songs.
According to the rapper, he still performs at events and hardly does a month pass without him having a show.
“Music is in my heart, I have been lost for a while because I have not been releasing music to the media and online platforms due to unavoidable circumstances but I am still in music, am doing shows, I have my studio, I record my music, am just putting together marketing issues and then I will be back,” Pili Pili said.
He added that one can only be sure of earning returns from a project through a good marketing strategy while saying that he can not invest in something that he is not going to earn returns from.
“In the last 2-3 years, music has not been paying very well because of corona, but I will release music as long as I shoot videos, I will release music, it is there,” he said.
Pili Pili was supposed to make a comeback in the industry last year in November but due to some unfinished contracts his plans have been stalled and he can not proceed on his own because of financial instability.
“There is a person I was discussing with, he wants us to do the biggest comeback in Kenya that is why I have been holding, so that he can write the contract but if he takes longer, I will have to find other means . I can’t do music on my own, the little I get is not enough, I can’t pay bills and still invest in music,” he said
Pili Pili began his music career at Tedd Josiah’s record label. He later left for Ogopa Deejays before proceeding to the Clemo owned label Calif Records.
The artist said that there were a lot of challenges at Calif records since a number of people were unhappy with him being signed at the label.
“I would record but you find my music is deleted from the computer. I would buy a CD worth Kshs500 to store my songs so that they don’t disappear,” he recalled.
Aside from that, other artists would steal his music and put their verses and release the songs without his consent.
Some of the awards he won were also withheld by the record label and he is requesting Clemo to release them.
