Ibrahim Rotich, the husband of the late athlete Agnes Rotich, has finally been freed on bond after two years in custody, following her brutal murder.
The 43-year old was freed on Wednesday by Eldoret High court Judge Robert Wananda.
The accused had been previously denied bail four times over his safety concerns as well as worries that he might flee upon release.
“For the past two years, the accused has been detained in prison remand in connection with the murder of his wife. This is enough time to ascertain his character and the environment outside the prison if released. Things have cooled and there appears not to be any danger to his life,” the judge ruled.
Rotich was released on a cash bond of Kshs400,000 or an alternative of Kshs bail of Kshs500,000.
The court has since barred him from leaving Uasin Gishu county, visiting Iten, where the murder occurred or interfering with witnesses.
Agnes Tirop was killed in 2021 in her home Iten county. Her body was found with multiple stab wounds.
Her husbands was on the run after the incident but he was later arrested in Mombasa. He was caught while attempting to escape to a neighbouring country.
Tirop died at the age of 25 years, just a month after breaking the 10km women-only road race world record in Germany.
