If you ever doubted the Luo proverb that stomach listens more than the ears, then the Kamiti three who escaped from the prison is a perfect demonstration.
Having made their way out of the Kamiti Maximum prison, hunger, thirst and loss of direction knew no mercy on the three terror suspects, forcing them to come out of their hiding and interact with the Kitui locals.
According to the Daily Nation, all was well for the three convicts as planned since their jailbreak. They then crisscrossed Machakos county towards Kitui on their way to Kitui county then to Boni Forest in Lamu county before landing in Somalia.
The criminal detectives have revealed that the Kamiti three managed to reach Kitui county the same night although it remains a mystery the means they used to land in Kitui.
“On the first day of their short lived freedom, the three casually walked in town undetected, finding their way to Kunda Kindu bus station in Kitui. On Monday, around noon, they boarded a matatu called Changamsha plying the Zombe-Endau-Malani route and told the crew that they were heading to Malalani market, the matatu’s final destination.” Quoted the Standard.
Malalani is about 100KM from Kitui town nearing Tana River county and is well known for being a hideout for terrorists.
The local publication added that upon arrival at Malalani in the evening, the Kamiti three took supper with the locals without raising any suspicion before walking away to an unknown destination.
Fastforward, the three appeared at the same market in the evening of the following day and asked for directions to Boni Forest in Lamu county or to Garissa. Residents also told the detectives that the three who looked unkempt, thirsty , hungry and exhausted used cash to buy biscuits, bottled water, milk and bread with one of them limping.
“They appeared confused and lost. They were asking how they can connect to Garissa or Tana River counties. They bought their food and fled back to the bush.” Said a trader who confessed that they were seen in the same market after emerging from the bush before disappearing into darkness.
Little did the strangers know that the locals had taken note of them and had even notified the police that three suspicious characters resembling the Kamiti three were having a field day in the area.
As a result, the search for the three convicts began on Wednesday but all was futile as they vanished into the thick forest that no one lives in.
According to the detectives, the Kamiti three hid during the day in the bushes and continued trekking at night in a bid to avoid being caught. However, they lost their planned escape route which would have led them to Tana River’s Hola town. Besides, one of them had developed a swollen wound and it made it impossible for them to continue running away. It is at this point that the security agents managed to corner them!
