How President Kenyatta Campaigned For Raila During Madaraka Day Celebrations After Snubbing DP Ruto

Date:

President Uhuru Kenyatta has led Kenyans in marking the 59th Madaraka Day celebrations in an event that was held at Uhuru Gardens.

The event was however conducted differently as the usual protocol was not followed. Usually the president would give his speech after several leaders have made their speech including the Deputy president.

However after the entertainment segment, President Kenyatta took over the programme and began giving his speech by recognizing  a few leaders present but DP Ruto was not on his list.  He then invited the chief guest, Sierra Leonean president Julius Maada, to make a few remarks before proceeding with his speech whereby he divulged into  what his administration has achieved despite criticisms.

The head of state highlighted how his administration had empowered women ranging from the Judiciary arm of the government to his cabinet.

“And of course we have our three arms of government, one of which is headed by a woman. After 58 years of our independence in May of 2021 I had the profound honor of being the first president of the Republic to commence and address with the salutation madam chief justice when the honorable lady justice Martha Koome assumed office as the first woman Chief Justice.

“We are also proud of the fact that Kenya’s judiciary boasts of a female Deputy chief justice, a female registrar and many female principal judges and presiding judges across our superior courts,” president Kenyatta said.

President Kenyatta used the opportunity to drum up support for Azimio saying that Kenyans have a chance of electing a woman to be the second in command in August. Even though the head of state did not mention the coalition’s name, it was clear that he was drumming support for ODM leader Raila Odinga who is Azimio’s flag bearer. Raila chose Martha Karua as his running mate.

“Going further, in August of this year if it is the wish of the Kenyan electorate we have a chance of electing a woman and shattering the glass ceiling by assuming the second highest office of the Republic of Kenya,” he said.
