How Nairobi Man Managed To Stay In A Rented House For Over 3 Years Without Paying Rent

Date:

A 31-year old man was arraigned in court for failing to pay rent for a period of three years and one month.

Emmanuel Osome was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts before Senior Principal magistrate Bernard Ochoi whereby he was accused of defrauding his landlady rent for the mentioned period.

He was charged with five counts of fraudulent misuse of electronic data contrary to the law and computer forgery.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and through his lawyers, he asked for leniency while saying that they were negotiating the matter with the landlady.

The officer investigating the matter told the court that they launched an investigation against the accused following a complaint from the landlady.

The owner of Kristy homes in Lang’ata wrote to DCI requesting for investigations against the accused on fraudulent payment of rent.

She accused Osome of submitting edited messages to prove that he had paid rent which was not the case.

“In the letter, she complained of one Emanuel Ian Osome who has been her tenant at Kristy Homes in Langata and has not been paying house rent for 37 months,” read part of the court documents.

The suspect would be issued with receipts after forwarding the edited messages to the caretaker, which indicated that he had paid rent through a bank account.

Investigations confirmed the landlady’s suspicions that no money had been sent to the account by the accused.

The investigating officers said that the messages were scripted and presented a report from the Communication Authority of Kenya.
