The administration of Rang’ala Boys High School, Siaya, was forced to release students for an early Christmas holiday on Sunday, December 5.
This is after the students became rowdy and questioned what they were still doing at the school yet the festive season was nearing.
According to the Ministry of Education, schools are supposed to close for the December holidays between 20th to 23rd of this month.
The school’s board of management said that it decided to release the students so as to avoid destruction of school property because the students had become unruly.
“The main reason from what we have assessed is that this students do not want to be in school during the month of December,” read the statement by the board of management chair Stephen Onyango
Onyango said that the students calmed down only after the principal assured them that they would be allowed to go home but some of them went ahead and broke windows and CCTV cameras at the institution.
“The principal even engaged police officers for assistance but they could not calm down. It is then that we consulted and agreed that they are released,” he said.
The principal has however been given names of the students responsible for the chaos for action.
“The principal is equally quantifying the cost of the damage caused which shall be passed to all the students on a pro rata basis. Let’s pray for the School and the students,” Onyango added.
Maranda Boys was also closed indefinitely after a 630-bed capacity dormitory was burnt down.
The fire incident came just days after form four students were suspended for refusing to sit for a Mock exam and had threatened to burn the school.
The dormitory, known as Boaz Owino Complex, housed form one students.
