On two occasions, ODM leader Raila Odinga nearly lost his life after he contracted covid 19 in March 2021. Odinga however survived the near-death situation following quick actions from his lastborn daughter Winnie.
Winnie narrated the scary events to a local daily for the first time.
In the first instance, Odinga, who was recovering at his Karen home after undergoing treatment at The Nairobi Hospital, could barely speak. When Winnie walked to Odinga’s recovery room she found him gasping for air since his oxygen mask had fallen from his face. She quickly fixed the mask, immediately improving her father’s condition.
In another instance, Winnie found her father motionless and blank and his temperature was very high. She quickly stashed paracetamol tablets in his mouth in a bid to lower his temperature.
Medical doctors said that Raila would be gone had Winnie not acted on time.Â
Aside from being the personal assistant to Odinga, Winnie volunteered to assist the nurse who was taking care of him when he was attacked by the deadly virus to ensure that he was close observation 24 hours.
The decision was not highly welcomed by her family because of how covid was highly contagious. She however insisted on taking the risk and even was taught over the phone by a doctor on how to administer injections.
Winnie also went an extra mile to cheer up her father. She would drive him around Karen with “the car windows open. ” She would as well entertain Odinga with his favorite German songs by searching for them on the internet.
At the time, Odinga hardly received guests except for Suna East MPÂ Junet Mohamed and one of his bodyguards who visited the home daily. The duo however barely got a chance to see him.
