Head teachers have appealed to education CS George Magoha to reconsider ordering the return to school of the remaining students.
This appeal comes at a time when there is a significant increase in the number of positive Covid-19 cases.
Currently, only Grade 4, Class 8, and Form 4 students have resumed face-to-face learning. The school heads warned that allowing other students to resume classes is akin to tickling a time bomb.
The head teachers pointed out that at the moment, they are finding it difficult to ensure that all students follow certain measures to curb the spread of Covid-19. They also revealed that students who are in session do not follow the health and safety precautions issued by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health.
Kahi Indimuli, the chairman of Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA), said that students no longer sanitize or wash their hands. He also said that some do not wear masks and maintaining social distance.
With the phased reopening of schools, the Ministry of Education placed the responsibility of provision of masks to parents and schools. Additionally, the ministry asked schools to partner with sponsors for the facilitation of developments such as the provision of water and construction of new classes.

“These learners think that after two weeks in schools without infections, they can go about living their normal lives,” Mr Indimuli said.
“Teachers are facing a heavy task of ensuring Covid-19 measures are maintained. Without supervision or in the absence of teachers, students interact as normal,” he added.
Nicholas Githuma, chairman of the Kenya Primary Schools Head Teachers Association (KEPSHA), also aired his sentiments on the issue. He said that there being no facilitation to adhere to the Covid-19 measures, both students and teachers are at risk.
In recent reports, 44 students in various counties tested positive for Covid-19. 33 teachers also contracted the virus, and two succumbed to Covid-19 related complications.
