The family of Frank Obegi, one of the five men whose badly mutilated bodies were found dumped in a Forest in Kijabe, has made a U-turn about their son living a lavish lifestyle.
According to them, Obegi is innocent of the online fraud that he was linked to together with his friends with police suspecting that the scamming is what might have led to their untimely deaths.
Obegi’s father Evans Mose said that they have not been able to transport his body from Nairobi to Ongwendo village in Kitutu Chache, Nyamira for his burial that has been scheduled for next Tuesday.
“You have seen for yourselves we have nothing here. Even transporting the body from Nairobi is a problem until now we have not gotten a coffin. Some of the money that he allegedly had should be released for his funeral arrangement,” his father said while at their rural home where funeral arrangements are going on.
On the other hand, his brother Laytton Ongaga denied claims of Obegi leading having lots of cash saying that he would at times borrow money to put food on his table.
“The lifestyle he lived I can say most of the time, someone can have 10,000 and decide to fly to the Coast, that is not a lavish lifestyle. He can decide to buy a pair of shoes and take photos and post but in real sense he is a person who would even borrow 100 bob so that he could eat,” Ongaga said.
Beatrice Nyanchama, Obegi’s mother, recounted the last conversation where he had borrowed her Kshs70.
“On Saturday 11 this month, he called me saying that he wanted only Kshs70, his phone was off. I was with his uncle and I told him Frank is asking for Kshs70 and I don’t have it,” she recounted.
The bodies of Obegi, his friends Elijah Omeka, Fred Mokaya and Moses Amenya as well as that of politician Joseph Njau Ng’endo were found dumped at Lari forest.
Obegi and his friends were reported missing before their bodies were discovered in the forest on Sunday.
