A woman identified as Joycely Savage, believed to be one of the victims of R. Kelly, came out to describe him as a loving and gentle man.
Savage, 26, is said to have been engaged to the disgraced singer. She was allegedly among the women that he sexually abused.
Before R. Kelly’s jail sentence, Savage had submitted an unsigned letter to Judge Anne Donnelly, who was in charge of the case ,asking for leniency towards the accused.
“I’m not the victim the government has portrayed me to be. Robert is not the monster that the government has described him to be. The Robert I know is very sweet, gentle, and kind. At the end of the day, he has always made sure that I’m taken care of, and any other women he was with as well,” Savage said in the letter.
Her parents have however denied having knowledge of any planned marriage and expressed their doubt if the plans were real. On the other hand, Savage had cut communication with her parents since she began living with R. Kelly. The duo met in 2015 during one of R. Kelly’s concerts. She however denied claims of dropping out of college at the age of 19 to be with R. Kelly as it had been indicated.
“Robert and I are deeply in love and it breaks my heart that the government has created a narrative that I’m a victim. I’m a grown woman, and can speak for myself. My relationship with Robert is amazing. He’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me. We have a very special connection and are deeply in love. I still support Robert to this day because I love him and will always be here to support him,” she further said in the letter.
In an interview in 2019, Savage and another woman, who also claimed to have been R. Kelly’s girlfriend, defended him over sex abuse allegations. The other woman however retracted her statement saying that the RnB singer had coached their responses after his conviction. The singer was monitoring their interview during recording.
Savages’s parents also claimed that she had been brainwashed to defend him against such allegations.
Kelly was sentenced to jail end of last month over crimes of sexual abuse and racketeering. He still faces charges of child pornography and obstruction of charges in a federal court.
