Kandara MP Alice Wahome has vowed to defy orders by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission on the use of some words that have been labeled hate speech.
One of the words that NCIC has banned politicians from using in rallies include the popular hatupangwingwi phrase that is common in UDA rallies.
Wahome said that such words will keep coming as Kenyans continue to protect the country’s democracy.
“I want to agree with those who have said hatupangwingwi, initially that word was sounding… I don’t know whether it is English or Swahili but hatupangwingwi is a terminology that you can not restrict or decide from your desk in our commission of NCIC that you will proscribe neither can you do for linda Kura, linda katiba.
“These words will continue coming as we protect the democratic space so I wrote and posted on my Fb an Twitter that I would be one of those who will defy NCIC,” the lawmaker remarked.
Wahome further said that they were not going to bow down to dictators who are in the public offices. She went ahead and criticized the NCIC chairman Samwel Kobia.
“Therefore on this platform today I have an opportunity to say to Kenyanyans msipangwe, msikubali, hatupangwingwi and we will not bow down to new dictators in our public service. Honestly I feel that Kobia is suffering from either age or lack of capacity to deal with a political situation so I want to ask him to reflect back on the list that he gave out,” she said.
On Friday, NCIC released a list of words that are considered hate speech include; Uncircumcised, Fumigation, Eliminate, Kill, Kaffir, Madoa doa, Chunga Kura, Kama noma noma, Kwekwe, Mende, Operation Linda kura, Watu wa kurusha mawe, Watajua hawajui,Wabara waende kwao, Wakuja (Those that come), Uthamaki ni witu, Kimurkeldet (Brown teeth) and Otutu Labatonik (uproot the weed)
