Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza is in police custody for illegally conducting the Okolea outreach programme.
The controversial governor was arrested in Ruiga village, Imenti Central while donating a cow on Wednesday afternoon.
Speaking to the media, Mwangaza said that the police declined to take her to a police station and instead are holding her in their car.
“I am under arrest. The police officers hawataki kunipeleka Station kufungua mashtaka. I have been held in this police car for two hours now. It is disheartening to witness needless curtailment of development efforts meant to help the vulnerable in our community. Such intimidation should not be allowed to obstruct progress in the Meru community,” she said.
The Okolea Outreach programme was banned by Interior CS Kithure Kindiki on September 22, saying they were inciteful.
This came after one of the Okoloea porogramme meetings turned chaotic with residents protesting by slaughtering a cow and burning mattresses.
“Reports that have reached me is that the Governor’s (Mwangaza) allies were inciteful, disrupted peace and assaulted journalists….thinking they are defending the Meru governor. The targeted people also broke the law. We have banned meetings that incite people. This is final. We are not going to allow it. If you think it is a joke, try it. Don’t try me,” Kindiki stated
