Nominated senator Karen Nyamu has defended the government’s move of imposing heavy taxes on Kenyans.
According to her, those protesting about high taxes have no salaries and this means that they shouldn’t be complaining because they are not charged anything.
“Those making a lot of noise about taxes and those complaining about being charged a lot of money are people who don’t even have salaries. This means that they are not taxed anything. They see taxes being paid and they make noise, taxes are high and they don’t have salaries,” the mother of three said in an interview with NTV.
Nyamu added that those who have high income should be the ones complaining since the tax regime that was introduced by the current government cushions low income earners from heavy taxes.
“The tax regime that was introduced by the Kenya Kwanza government has the bottom up model. This means that those of us with big salaries we are supposed to be complaining because we are the ones who have been highly affected by the taxes. We feel it. My point the taxes have been removed from the bottom an brought up,” she said.
Nyamu further explained that Kenyans are complaining about taxes because their money is looted by corrupt officials.
“Countries are developed with taxes but the problem with our country is corruption and that’s people are protesting about taxes because they are taxed and the proceeds end up people’s pockets,” she said.
The interviewer however noted that VAT taxes cut across all Kenyans.
