9,774 households in Nairobi have been given Ksh10,000 each as government scales up efforts to relocate residents from riparian land.
According to Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, the exercise targets over 40,000 households.
He noted that relocation will help protect the citizens from the danger of flooding following the recent rains experienced in the country.
“The riparian reclamation along the Nairobi River Basin began on May 2, 2024, following a Cabinet directive for immediate evacuation due to flood risks.
Overseen by a multi-agency team led by the Ministry of Interior, the operation targets structures along the waterways in Mathare, Nairobi, and Ngong rivers.
Now 75% complete, the effort has faced a number of challenges, but has equally made significant progress in areas like Starehe, Embakasi, and Mathare.
9,774 households have each received a cash stipend of Ksh. 10,000 and verification process is underway for the others, with a target of 40,000 households. The operation aims to finish within a week, focusing on preventing re-occupation and clearing debris,” PS Omollo stated.
