Machakos governor Alfred Mutua has been blasted for lying on national television that he had fully connected residents to piped water.
In a recent interview with Citizen TV, governor Mutua said that he had been able to fulfill the promise he made to the people of Machakos county during the 2017 campaigns.
Mutua said that he had established boreholes, wells and dams across the county. He further said that the Covid 19 pandemic had slowed down his development agenda but among all the governors he had done a lot.
“Because of leadership, I gave a promise and I kept it. I told my people that I would put tap water all over. I have been able to dig almost 700 boreholes, more than all the 46 governors combined. I have dug dams, I have dug wells, I have laid over 500 kilometers of water,” Mutua told Citizen TV on November 4.
Machakos County speaker Florence Mwangangi has however disagreed with Mutua’s statement and termed the water situation in the county as dire.
According to her, a number of residents are still struggling to access water.
“The fact of the matter is that we don’t have water in Machakos County; it’s a dire situation on the ground, you go to places like Kyua and you find that the families wake up as early as 9 am to go and look for water many kilometres away. If you look around you’ll find there is a river, when it rains the water just flows down to the ocean. One week after, the families start going to look for that water kilometres away,” Mwangi said
Adding that, “It is the high time that we walked the talk and have a little talk and lots of action.”
