Engineer George Mwangi, the husband of Kiambu politician Gladys Chania was buried in his Mang’u home in Gatundu North, where he was allegedly murdered.
Mwangi, a Rwandan-based businessman, is believed to have been killed by his wife, with the help of her domestic worker on Saturday, October 8 at night before his body was dumped at Kieni forest.
His burial however was characterized by confusion and drama. First of all, the burial ceremony only lasted 2 hours. In most Kenyan communities, the burial of a person of his age is supposed to take the entire day but he was hurriedly buried like a child.
Those who accompanied his body from Kenyatta University Funeral Home arrived in Mang’u at noon and by 1.50, he was already buried.
Aside from that, there was confusion about the burial mass. The mass was presided over by Hope Fellowship Centre yet he worshiped at Catholic church.
Catholic Women Association (CWA) at St. Joseph’s the Worker Catholic Church, which is located about 200m from Mwangi’s home, however proceeded with their mass. Mwangi worshiped at the Church whenever he was in the country.
Another confusion witnessed was conflicting burial dates. The Catholic church had been informed that the deceased would be buried on Friday, only for them to find his burial underway after the mass from the church.
“We are equally shocked and confused that the event dates were changed. We had been told that Mwangi would be buried on Friday. The church management had put in place all measures to ensure it happens smoothly. We have just come from a CWA mass only to witness the burial happening today,” a member of the church told reporters.
A family member however said that the dates were changed so that his eldest daughter could witness his burial before flying back to the US where she resides.
Journalists were barred from attending the event. According to a local media house, they however came up with mechanisms to capture the events of the ceremony.
Inside the small compound, tents, and seats to accommodate 150 guests had been set up. Some of the family members were left without a place to sit and were forced to follow the proceedings while standing.
Finally, Chania missed the burial, event though she was freed on bond on Monday. She paid her tribute through her sister.
In the message, the suspect admitted that they had good and bad times during their 24-year marriage.
“It has been 24 years since the day we settled together on a Sunday 25th April 1998. I thank God for the way you cared for our family day in day out. Just like any other family, we had our high and low moments but each day we held our love for each other by reminding ourselves of the far we have come. For now that you have left us untimely, we shall try to fill in your shoes but it’s already difficult to fill them…. rest in peace my love, the father to my children,” Chania said.
