An autopsy conducted on the body of Gichugu Returning officer Geoffrey Gitobu has proved what led to his untimely death.
According to pathologists who performed the exercise, Gitobu’s death was natural and there was no foul play as many Kenyans had widely speculated, following what happened to Embakasi East returning officer Daniel Musyoka. Musyoka was killed before announcing election results.
IEBC pathologist Ayub Macharia revealed that Gitobu’s death was caused by a clot in his pulmonary vein. He also said that he had anemia.
Gitobu, 57, met his death on Monday, August 22 at around 2 pm while in Nanyuki, Laikipia county, which is miles away from Kirinyaga county, where he had served as a returning officer.
Apparently, he had taken a break from his work to pay his family a visit in Nanyuki. Other sources indicate that he visited the town to check on his businesses.
The death was reported by his brother, who said that he felt dizzy, before being rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
“A brother of the deceased made a report at the police station on Monday afternoon. The report indicated that Mr Gitobu was driving within Nanyuki town when he felt dizzy and was rushed to a private hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” Laikipia East Police boss John Tarus told reporters.
