Geoffrey Gitobu: Fresh Details Surrounding Death Of Gichugu Returning Officer Emerge

Date:

Fresh details regarding the death of an IEBC official identified as Geoffrey Gitobu have emerged.

Gitobu served as a returning officer of Gichugu constituency in Kirinyaga county during the August 9 general elections.

He is said to have died under mysterious circumstances on Monday August 22, while in Nanyuki. Earlier reports indicated that Gitobu died while at IEBC offices in Nanyuki where he had gone to print some documents. Apparently, he was on the line waiting to be served before he collapsed and was pronounced dead at the Nanyuki Teaching and Referreal Hospital.

While reporting about the incident at a police station his brother however said that he was driving in Nanyuki town when he felt dizzy.

“A brother of the deceased made a report at the police station on Monday afternoon. The report indicated that Mr Gitobu was driving within Nanyuki town when he felt dizzy and was rushed to a private hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” Laikipia East police boss John Tarus told a local newspaper.

The brother however did not indicate if Gitobu had any health condition in his report which was very brief.

On the other hand, an IEBC official from Laikipia, who did not want to be named, said that the deceased did not visit their offices as it had widely been reported.

“He was driving in town when he felt unwell and sought assistance from a private clinic. Once at the clinic, an ambulance was called and he was rushed to Cottage Hospital where he died before he could be attended to,” the official said.
