Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced plans to broker a truce between Meru MCAs and Governor Kawira Mwangaza who survived her second impeachment motion.
Speaking on Sunday, November 12, Gachagua announced plans to convene a meeting to find a lasting solution between the MCAs and their county boss.
The move is aimed at stopping Mwangaza from facing a third impeachment motion.
Explaining the significance of the truce, Gachagua noted that it would spur development and peace in Meru County.
“There have been issues in Meru County that were presided over by the Senate. I was previously at the forefront of holding talks and we were in agreement that brought peace in the county for one year. They then had disagreements and I let them be to see how things would turn out,” Gachagua stated.
Gachagua stressed the significance of maintaining peace within county leadership, citing his past interventions in Kericho and Kiambu Counties.
“I sat them down and we are in agreement and there is peace,” he added.
Looking ahead, Gachagua urged the leadership in Embu County to prioritize development in their engagements, hoping to avoid the need for external intervention.
Mwangaza survived a second impeachment after a Senate plenary on November 9, 2023, failed to uphold any of the seven charges cited against her by the MCAs who had unanimously voted to eject her from office.
On November 10, the governor made a triumphant entry in Meru, where she tendered an apology to the people she wronged and called for peace and unity among the Meru community and its leaders.
Meru MCAs are yet to respond to Mwangaza’s apology and give their way forward.
