Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala sparked a heated debate about his academic qualifications on social media ever since he demeaned Kenyan police officers.
On May 25, during a Kenya Kwanza rally in Kakamega, Malala, in front of police officers who were providing security at the rally, claimed that police officers are not educated and their only qualifications into the service are hands to hold guns and legs.
One of the police officers at the event could not hide his feelings after being despised to such a level.
Later on, his competitors in the Kakamega gubernatorial race claimed that he was unfit to vie for the position because he was not qualified academically. Fernandes Barasa, who is eyeing the seat on an ODM ticket and Lugari MP Ayub Savula are said to be behind the sentiments.
Further questions arose when Malala could not give a clear explanation about his academic qualifications during an interview with a local radio station with most Kenyans saying that his degree could have been forged and was never a student at the United States International University(USIU).
“I graduated, I went up to USIU. I finished the degree in 2019. I joined in 2006/2007, I graduated in 2011 but I picked my degree in 2019, the date that degree was printed,” the senator said.
He was however unsure of his graduation year but to prove his point right, Malala said that he announced his bid for the MCA seat in his graduation party.
Cleophas Malala , I graduated in 2010 , 2011 , I don’t remember from USIU , But 2019 is the date my certificate was printed, Ok Robert Alai can you please have this boy for supper ??? @RobertAlai

Malala also took to his social media to share his academic documents that had been approved by the Commission of University Education.
The documents indicate that Malala finished form four at Friends School Kamusinga in 2003 where he managed to score a B(plain).

According to his profile in parliament, Malala studied a Diploma in Film and TV production at East African School of Media just after finishing High School.
He then proceeded to study Bsc. in Information Systems and Technology at USIU. Before all that, Malala had sat for his Kenya Certificate for Primary Education(KCPE) at the Star academy.
Currently, Malala is said to be pursuing a Masters degree at USIU.
