There was drama at the Milimani Law Courts on Monday during a cross examination session when a former police boss assaulted a lawyer.
It is alleged that the former Director of Operations at the Kenya Police Service John Edward Njeru punched lawyer Alex Kimani who was cross-examining him.
The 69-year old is said to have been angered by the questions that Kimani was asking and responded by landing a heavy blow on the lawyer’s abdomen.
The incident occurred when the lawyer asked the court to allow him move close to the retired officer so as to have him take a closer look at some documents.
Njeru took the opportunity to assault the lawyer who is currently suffering from serious injuries.
The retired police boss was sentenced to a one day jail term while the lawyer was rushed to the hospital for medical assistance.
“After yesterday’s incident, my colleague (Kimani) developed a sharp pain in his abdomen. He visited the hospital and was advised by the doctor to undergo a scan this morning to ascertain the cause of the pain,” lawyer Waweru Benson elaborated to Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi on Tuesday.
According to Waweru, that was not the first time that Njeru was disrespecting the court.
He claimed that Njeru had made some belittled a prosecutor in the past.
The magistrate however directed him to file a complaint with the police but criticized Njeru’s actions.
The retiree is a complainant in a fraud case involving a forged certificate of lease for a piece of land in Nanyuki.
In a separate incident, a drunk police officer shot and fatally injured a youth in Kapsoya Estate, Uasin Gishu county.
The incident that was condemned by members of the public has also attracted the attention of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
