Embattled former KBC boss Samuel Maina apologized before his unceremonious sacking on Tuesday December 19.
Maina reportedly wrote an apology to ICT CS Eliud Owalo and State Department of Broadcasting and Telecommunication PS Edward Kisiangani where by he admitted his mistake and promised that it would not occur again.
“I refer to a letter RE KHC/MD/5/42/A/C dated 18 December 2023 which was directly addressed to Mr. Matthew Vinall of Dentons UK, the law firm that represents KBC in LCIA Arbitration No. 12223. The letter was copied to your offices,” his apology read in part as quoted by the star.
“I profusely apologize for not consulting yourself or the Principal Secretary in our ministry before doing the letter. I have also noted there was a grievous misrepresentation of the figure quoted in the letter. I have forthwith withdrawn the letter and commit that such an error will not occur again,” Maina further said.
Maina was shown the door for committing the government of Kenya to pay Kshs769 million to the LCIA Arbitration vs KBC without seeking concurrence with the ministry as well as the National Treasury and Office of the Attorney General.
In his directive, CS Owalo appointed Paul Macharia as the new acting Managing Director.
“This appointment is effective from December 19, 2023, for a period of six months or until the appointment of a substantive Chief Executive Officer in accordance with section 34 of the Public Service Commission Act, No. 10 of 2017,” he stated. “Meanwhile, the board is instructed to expedite the process of recruitment of a substantive Managing Director for the corporation.”
Maina was named KBC’s acting MD in March 2022, succeeding former MD Naim Bilal, whose term expired on March 19, 2022. He previously served as KBC’s editor-in-chief.
