A form one student in Nyamira county was arrested for sneaking out of his school to check on the bhang he was growing at home.
The 16-year old was nabbed by Enchoro assistant chief Henry Otiso following a tip-off from members of the public and presented at the Gesima police post.
“I received a tip-off from the public that the student had sneaked from school and that he had been seen where he resides. I rushed there with some other members of Nyumba Kumi and arrested the boy. We also uprooted the bhang as evidence,” reads part of the statement that the assistant chief recorded with the police.
According to the administrator, the student had grown about 50 plants of bhang close to their house.
Nyamira county police boss Grace Kakai said that the suspect will be arraigned in court. She asked parents to keenly monitor their children’s activities.
“Parents should be key in preventing the problem of drugs,” Kakai said.
Nyamira was placed number two nationally on cases of alcohol and drug abuse.
Weeks ago, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) and officers from other agencies met in Nyamira to address the rising cases of illicit brew and drug abuse.
