The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission concluded the vetting exercise of presidential aspirants on June 6.
The exercise that has been going on at the Bomas of Kenya began on May 29 and has seen only four people make it to the presidential race.
According to a statement from IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati, David Mwaure Waihiga of the Agano party, ODM leader Raila Odinga, DP William Ruto of UDA and Prof George Wajackoya of The Roots Party are the only individuals who qualified for the race.
Chebukait stated that the above mentioned candidates “met the requisite constitutional and statutory requirements and therefore were successful in their bid to contest as candidates for presidency”.
13 other aspirants were disqualified for failing to meet the requisite constitutional and statutory requirements. They include candidates who wanted to vie Independently and few other flag bearers of political parties.
Those who were going for the presidential seat Independently include; Eliud Muthiora Kariara, Dorothy Kemunto Nyangori, George Munyotta, Jeremiah Nyaga, James Kamau, June Juliet Munyeki, and Peter Mumbiko King’ori.
Those who representing political parties are; Jimi Wanjigi(Safina), Ekuru Aukot(Thirdway Alliance)Justus Juma(Freedom and Justice) , Walter Ochong’a Mong’are(Umoja Summit Party) and Njeru Kathangu of Ford Asili.
“Regulation 43(2) of the Elections (General) Regulations 2012 provides that a Returning officer shall hold a nomination paper invalid on grounds that the candidate is not qualified to be or, is disqualified by the law to have been nominated or elected to the elective post for which nomination is sought,” IEBC noted.
On that note, Mong’are’s candidature was revoked by Chebukati. He was the first person to be cleared on the presidential race.
“As the Returning officer for the presidential election, upon discovery of Walter Mong’are’s lack of academic qualification, I invited him to appear before me today(Monday) at 2.00pm to clarify the issue. He failed to honor my invitation and pursuant to Regulation 43 (2) of the election, I hereby revoke the nomination certificate of Walter Ochong’a Mong’are,” Chebukati said.
He however called upon candidate to abide by the Electoral code of conduct during the campaign period
