Rita Waeni Muendo, the JKUAT university student who was brutally murdered in an Airbnb in Roysambu mid-last month has finally been laid to rest.
Waeni was buried on Monday at her parents’ home in Mukimwani Village, Kisau location, Makueni County.
The slain university student was buried in a private ceremony that was attended by her close family members on Monday morning.
“We are at peace because we know that our larger family, friends, colleagues and many Kenyans who have shared this loss will understand this decision. We thank everyone for their support, contributions and for constantly praying for us,” the family said.
Waeni’s dismembered body was discovered on January 15, a day after she had left her aunt’s place in Syokimau, where she was staying, to meet with a friend.
Her head, which was missing from the murder scene, was later retrieved in Kiambaa Dam, Kiambu county.
An autopsy that was conducted on the head revealed that she was first strangled to death, before decapitation.
It was also confirmed that a blunt object was used to bruise the head.
“The main findings were that the head had been chopped off from the neck at the level of C5 (vertebrae on the neck). We also saw some fractures on bones,” said Oduor while addressing journalists. I can comfortably conclude that the cause of death was strangulation after which she was decapitated and her body dumped,” government chief pathologist Johansen Oduor said.
