The Director General of the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) Ezra Chiloba has revoked licenses of 60 radio stations in the country.
According to a press release on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, the move was taken after the stations failed to adhere to license offers within the offer period as prescribed by the Authority in accordance with the Kenya Information and Communications Act.
CA said that the cancellation of the license offer is accompanied by a notice of revocation of the FM broadcasting frequencies assigned to the applicants.
Some of the big names affected by the recent move include NRG radio, Capital Fm, Hero radio and One FM.
24 other commercial and community radio stations that had been assigned frequencies and were yet to obtain licenses have had their applications canceled. Some of them are Wega FM, Radio Tumaini(Mombasa), Radio Mikayi and Thayu FM.
“The Authority has initiated the rejection of licence application for commercial and community broadcasting services by the listed 24 applicants for failing to comply with related licensing requirement,” CA’s statement further read.
A total of 19 TV stations were not spared in the crackdown and those affected include; Youth TV, Nairobi TV, Smart TV and Pokot.
