Eliud Kipchoge had expected to bag a gold in the 2024 Paris Olympics in France, in the race that went down on Saturday morning.
However, things did not go as he had expected and he started lagging behind minutes after the race began.
At the 28KM mark, Kipchoge was captured walking and finally gave up at the 31km mark, giving his running boots, sock and bib to spectators.
Speaking after the encounter, Kipchoge, 39, termed the Paris Marathon the worst in his athletics career.
According to him, he has never failed to finish a race before. He however remains optimistic of what the future holds for him.
“It’s a difficult time for me. This is my worst marathon. I have never done a DNF and that’s life. Like a boxer I have never been knocked down. I have won, I have come second, fifth, eight, tenth and now I did not finish. That is life, I don’t know what next. I need to go back home, sit down and try to figure out my 21 years of running at a high level. I need to evolve and feature in other things,” he said.
Kenya’s Benson Kipruto won bronze in the race. Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola scooped the gold while Belgium’s Bashir Abdi bagged silver
