Government officials have warned parents against packing hand sanitizers for their children as they plan to resume learning, fearing that could result in alcohol abuse in schools.
Learning institutions have therefore be asked to ensure there are water and soap in schools.
Benson Kule, the commissioner directorate of education standards noted that if students are allowed to carry hand sanitizers some could use the window to bring alcohol to school.
“Sanitisers can be used for offices and teachers alone and not for learners. The alcohol content is very high. Learners are young people. They should be protected. Some will be carrying waragi [gin] saying it is a sanitizer and you will not be able to tell. You will end up with a drunk school,” he said as reported by the Daily Mirror.

Final year students in both primary and secondary schools will be resuming learning on Thursday, six months after the Ugandan government imposed a lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the country.
The government will closely monitor the performance of the phased reopening before learners from other classes be allowed to join in schools.
