Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested a suspect selling fake Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment letters, for amounts ranging from Ksh400,000- 500,000.
According to the EACC statement, the suspect was apprehended on Thursday, September 14 in Sagana and processed at the EACC Central Regional Office in Nyeri.
“In one case, the suspect had asked for Ksh450,000 from the complainant who paid Ksh300,000 on September 11, 2023, and was issued with the fake recruitment letter. The complainant was to pay the balance on September 15, 2023, in order to be “cleared to sign all remaining admission forms” in readiness for “direct recruitment” to KDF,” EACC stated.
During the arrest, EACC intercepted two other victims who were about to pay Ksh 500,000 each for the fake KDF recruitment letters.
“Following the arrest of the suspect, the Commission has received several other complaints from victims who have allegedly lost millions of shillings to the suspect in pursuit of admission of their sons and daughters to KDF or other security forces. He is believed to have engaged in such activities for years,” the commission indicated.
“Any person with related allegations against the suspect may contact or visit the nearest EACC Office,” they further advised.
Before the recruitment drive kicked off, Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale emphasized that the exercise was going to be free, fair and above board for all qualified Kenyan youths including those from marginalized communities.
The CS stated that he had made it his undertaking to have the recruitment paint a national picture by having military officers and service members selected from across the country and cautioned parents not to give any money to secure the slots.
Following the recruitment exercise, KDF promised to publish the names of successful candidates in the daily newspapers.
On Friday, September 15, the Ministry of Defence released candidates shortlisted for specialist officers and tradesmen who are set to attend interviews at a scheduled time.
