Drama In Parliament As Mps Face Off Over Sagana III Declaration

Date:

There was drama in parliament during the Thursday February 24 sitting after MPs openly indulged in politics.

It all started when Nominated MP David Ole Sankok rose to raise the issue of hiked food prices urging the speaker to consider the issue as a matter of urgency because millions of Kenyans have been affected leading to protests on social media via the #lowerfoodprices.

“I rise to seek leave for adjournment of the house for the purpose of discussing a matter of urgent national importance on rising food prices in the country. Honorable speaker according to the latest data from KNBS food prices rose by 8.89% in January 2022 making it hard for thousands of Kenyans to put food on the table,” Sankok said in his motion.

The first person who rose to support the motion was Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi who further said that the Sagana declaration was also an important subject of discussion.

The Sagana declaration was an event held on February 23, in Nyeri whereby president Uhuru Kenyatta told his community that he was supporting ODM leader Raila Odinga’s presidential candidature and not his deputy’s because of some reasons.

“He cast some serious aspersions when he was trying to when he was moving that we need to debunk when the motion is approved and  we get opportunity to discuss and raise very pertinent issues that concern Kenyans. As you know Mr. Speaker we represent Kenya and we have been known to be pro people and we can actually combine that with the Sagana declaration so that we can have a more comprehensive…” Andayi said before the speaker cut him short.

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed took the stage next, assuring the speaker that he will not make any political statement however, he went on to echo what Andayi was saying about Sagana.

“Mr. Speaker, I want to commend your ruling. This is an important matter that Sankonk has raised and I think as leaders who have been elected by Kenyans It is upon us to discuss issues affecting our people. We must also have a discussion on issues of national importance like the Sagana Declaration. That was a very important day for this country where the head of the state guided the people of this nation on the way forward,” the lawmaker said.

Endebes MP Robert Pukose rose up to criticize the two MPs for trivializing the hiked food prices issue with the Sagana declaration.

“The matter that Hon Sankok has raised is very critical and my friend honorable Junet and Hon Wandayi being senior members of this house should not trivialize the matter associating it with a declaration that was made in a language that not everybody understood,” Pukose said.
