The Office of the Director of Public Prosecution has set the record straight about allowing Worldcoin, a crypto currency firm to resume operations in the country.
In a statement dated June 21, 2024, DPP said that it didn’t give world coin a nod to resume operations.
“The Director of Public Prosecutions would like to categorically state that no such authorization was granted to the management of Worldcoin to resume operations within the Republic of Kenya,” DPP stated.
DPP noted that the police file inquiry regarding Worldcoin was forwarded to DPP for perusal and advise by DCI.
In a letter dated May 13, 2024, DPP issued a response to DCI, giving suggestions on how they could handle the matter;
“For prudent continued operations, we observe that you consider the following; 1. Proper business registration services in liaison with the Registrar of Business Registry. 2. Proper licensing and coordination by the Office of Data Protection Commission and Communication Authority of Kenya. 3. Ensure proper vetting and legal contracting of all third party vendors within the country,” read the statement in part.
The statement came barely a day after reports emerged that Worldcoin was resuming operations in the country after police dropped investigations against the firm.
Worldcoin was under investigations for allegedly illegally collecting transferred users’ personal data.
“Upon review of the file, the Director of Public Prosecutions directed that the file be closed with no further police action,”DCI)wrote in a June 14 letter to Coulson Harney, a law firm representing Worldcoin.
The firm’s operation was suspended last year in August.
