Former military officer Robert Mugo Mboi is now living like a pauper after 10 years of serving President Jomo Kenyatta’s family.
At first, he served Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’s family as a gateman and after four years , Mugo was reassigned as the official driver of Uhuru, his brother Muhoho and their sister Nyokabi.
In a past interview, he said that he would take the siblings to St. Monica’s School in Nairobi to their home in Ichaweri, Gatundu from 1972,
Mugo grew fond of president Kenyatta whom he described as a social, easy going and an affectionate young man. Uhuru would even break protocols just to spend time with him.
“He would break protocols often and loved spending his free time with the officers who worked at their home. We would chat for hours, crack jokes and he would often surprise us with delicious meals. It was fun having him around because he exuded kindness and brilliance,” Mugo said
The former constable served in the military for 31 years but did not achieve much judging from his recent interview. He now wants to be rewarded a car and a piece of land as promised by Mzee Jomo before his deatrh in 1978
According to him, the last time to meet with president Kenyatta was back in 2007 during the general elections. The president took his contact but to date he has never reached out to him.
“If possible it would have been much better. I also have three grandchildren who are graduates but have no jobs. I would love to see them employed,” he said.
His wife Annette Njeri on the other hand claimed that they have many problems because they don’t have a bigger land.
“We want a farm. We have many problems due to lack of land. We have a small plot and he has many children.
At some point in the interview, he recalled the moment he had to help president Kenyatta in riding his new bicycle and the occasional wheelbarrow rides.
