Several popular Kenyans are on the spot for spreading false information during the recent general elections .
According to a report by the Media Council of Kenya on the 2022 general elections the said individuals shared information regarding the general elections that misled Kenyans.
The affected people include: Digital media strategist Dennis Itumbi, Journalist Mac Otani, recently elected Kileleshwa MCA and blogger Robert Alai, Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi, Nairobi senator who is also ODM’s secretary general Edwin Sifuna, Dikembe Diseme and Miguna Miguna.
“There was weaponization of misinformation and propaganda during the elections and beyond, especially on digital platforms that border on defamation and publication of false content,” part of the council’s report read.
“Most of the websites that shared misinformation were designed to make consumers assume they are reading from reliable sources,” the report further read.
MCK further cited Moses Kuria’ s case whereby he was summoned by DCI after sharing a series of posts on social media giving details of plans to rig elections.
“Top alert! 40 trucks with marked ballot papers will leave Nakuru state lodge to various destinations in 20 minutes.People, Media please stop them. Most of them have GK registration numbers,” one of Kuria’s posts, a day before elections, read.
MCK however noted that content from above-mentioned people and many other bloggers was fabricated to mislead consumers and spread fake news within their networks.
