Two days to the burial of the late world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum on Friday, DCI Director of Homicide Martin Nyuguto joined investigations into the death of the star athlete who died in an accident along the Eldoret-Eldama Ravine road a week ago.
Nyuguto led a team of his colleagues from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide Unit in a fresh investigation into the deaths of the late athlete and his coach, Gervis Hakizimana.
The detectives spent most of the day retracing the late Kiptum’s steps in the hours leading to his demise, their first stop being Rupa’s Mall where the late athlete was believed to have spent some hours before his death.
Next, the officers visited Annex Estate and in particular a restaurant in the estate where Kiptum was believed to have been, before heading home at Chepkorio along the Eldoret-Eldama Ravine road.
Later in the afternoon, detectives spent much of their time at the scene of the accident that claimed the late world record holder’s life alongside his coach on the night of Sunday 11.
Here they carried out fresh forensic investigations to try and answer the question of how Kiptum managed to leave the motorway, causing a dip in the pavement immediately to his right, before hitting a tree.
