DCI has broken silence on a news report about a man who claimed to have bought a gun that assassinated freedom fighter Tom Mboya.
The story was published on Saturday’s Daily Nation.
92-year old Nthwiga Muriathika from Embu confessed that he was among the three hitmen who were hired to finish Tom Mboya.
Nthwiga allegedly bought the gun from a Somalian black market to avoid it being yraced to the government.
According to him, Tom Mboya had made more enemies than friends within the government and appeared to align himself with Western powers, a stance that infuriated a section of the Mt. Kenya region, particularly those who had fought in the Mau Mau rebellion.
In response this, DCI said that it has initiated investigations into the claims.
“The attention of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has been drawn to an article in the Saturday Nation dated July 6th, 2024. The article reports that a 92-year-old man purchased the pistol that was used in the killing of Tom Mboya, a trade unionist, educator, Pan-Africanist, author, former minister and statesman.
“The DCI has initiated an investigation and necessary action will be taken once the investigation is complete,” DCI said on a social media post.
Tom Mboya was shot dead along Moi Avenue, formerly Government Road, on July 5, 1969, prompting riots in Nairobi.
He was laid to rest at Rusinga Island.
