Four men believed to be behind the drugging of passengers in a bus are expected in court on Monday after spending the weekend behind bars.
The four, identified as Stephen Odero, Benson Odero, Joshua Orengo and Harrison Nyamu were arrested by police officers at Kabete Police Station.
According to a report by DCI, the suspects drugged the passengers on the bus that was enroute to Nairobi from Kisumu with an unknown substance so that they could steal their valuables.
From his rear view mirror, the driver of the bus, Emmanuel Barasa, noticed that everyone was asleep and they were snoring heavily but some people were moving around from seat to seat.
The alarmed driver resolved to drive the bus to Kabete police station as the thugs attempted to escape when they noticed that their ‘party’ had been spoiled. Barasa quickly reported to the police that the bus was under attack prompting police officers to surround it immediately.
“The bus traveling to the capital city from Kisumu had been driven into the station, after its driver noticed from the rear view mirror that everyone was fast asleep snoring, save for two people who were moving from seat to seat.
“But it is the snores reverberating from all corners of the bus that were unusually loud, punctuated by threatening growls that alarmed the driver, who immediately detoured to the police station situated along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway,” DCI said.
When the thugs saw that they had been cornered, they decided to consume the remaining substance to evade arrest.
Police officers noticed that most of the passengers were sleepy and drowsy and had lost their valuables including Laptops, Tablets, Mobile Phones and cash money among other valuables.
“The officers managed to single out four suspects in whose possession the valuables were recovered. However, as the officers were booking them, the suspects suddenly became drowsy, incoherent and very drunk, forcing the law enforcers to first rush them to a nearby hospital for medical examination,” DCI said.
“It is at the hospital that it was discovered that the suspects who were sweating profusely, had taken a dose of their own medicine after ingesting the remaining ‘pishori’, in a bid to destroy the exhibit,” the statement further read.
The bus was however allowed to resume its journey as the passengers were advised to seek medical attention on arrival.
