Mary Wambui Mungai, a businesswoman at the centre of 2.2 billion Kenya shillings tax evasion escaped the criminal detectives at William Ruto’s Weston Hotel.
It is reported that Mary Wambui Mungai had been hiding at the facility belonging to the deputy president where she had been hiding for the longest time possible.
As a result, the police raided Weston Hotel only to realise that she had vanished to an unknown destination a few minutes later without carrying their personal belongings
At the time of the raid, it is reported that deputy president William Ruto was hosting a delegation from Garissa county for a fund drive, although it is not clear if he was informed that the police had a court warrant allowing them to pursue Mary Wambui Mungai at Weston Hotel.
According to a statement by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Mary Wambui and Purity Njoki Mungai who are both directors at Purma Holdings Limited escaped from their Weston Hotel rooms before the KRA and the police arrived at the facility.
“Upon searching the hotel premises, KRA officers and the police found personal belongings of the two including cash, bank cards and car keys, a clear indication that the two were residing at the hotel,” KRA said in the statement.
A local publication claimed they used a connecting door from their room on the third floor to escape to the next room making it difficult for the officers to pursue them further. Police cordoned off the hotel as a search on the two intensified in vain.
This melee forced some of the guests who were at the hotel to drive out in a bid to avoid being involved in the unfortunate commotion.
Apparently, a warrant of arrest was issued on the two on December 8, 2021 after the directors failed to appear in Anti-Corruption Court before Chief Magistrate, Felix Mutinda Kombo.
They were supposed to answer eight counts of unlawfully omitting taxes due in the income tax returns submitted to the Commissioner for Domestic Taxes for the period between 2014-2016.
The court heard that the two did not honour summons to appear before Kenya Revenue Authority on December 3rd 2021 where they were to be informed of charges against them. Instead, they decided to send their accountant.
Mpasho reports that through their lawyer Syvanus Osoro, Mary Wambui Mungai informed the court that she was admitted to hospital from December 29, 2021. However, no medical records or disclosure of illness or hospitalisation have so far been made.
