Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has announced that former president Mwai Kibaki will be laid to rest on Saturday April 30.
His burial will come after a state funeral that will be held on Friday April 29 at the Nyayo stadium.
Speaking to the press while at Harambee house, Matiang’i, who is chairing the state funeral committee, said that the preliminary preparations have already been finalized.
“We have finalized preliminary plans for the state funeral of his excellency president Mwai Kibaki and we would like the public to know that this will take place on April 29,2022 at Nyayo stadium and president Kibaki will then be laid to rest on Saturday April 30,2022 in Othaya, Nyeri county.
“Before then, the president’s body will lie at the National Assembly for three days between Monday and Wednesday for members of the public and the rest of the country’s leadership to pay their last respect.,” Matiang’i said
The CS further announced that those interested in condoling with the family to do so on Tuesday and Wednesday at Kibaki’s Nyari office in Nairobi.
“Especially members of the diplomatic core and any senior members who may wish to visit the family or convey their condolences in person,” Matiang’i said.
The CS also said that a CDF facility will be set up in Othaya Nyeri county for members of the public to visit and pay their last respect.
Aside from that, condolence books will be available in most of the public offices including the Senate and National Assembly, government ministries, Harambee house, ministry of foreign affairs and also in the 47 counties by Tuesday morning.
A comprehensive statement on the funeral arrangement will be issued on Sunday.
Kibaki’s death was announced on Friday afternoon by President Uhuru Kenyatta. Kibaki, who served as the third president of Kenya from 2022-2013, passed on at the age of 91 years.
