CJ Koome Gives Way Forward On The Expose About Judge Chitembwe’s Corrupt Deals

Date:

Chief Justice Martha Koome has addressed the leaked videos that exposed High Court Judge Said Juma Chitembwe.

The videos were leaked by former Nairobi Mike Sonko who accused him of being involved with corruption.

The chief justice said that the judiciary has taken note of the allegations and will launch investigations into them.

“The Commission will meet to deliberate on the issue according to its constitution and statutory set procedures,” Koome said.

She further said that a judge can only be removed from office following a motion by the Judicial Service Commission or a petition filed by anyone to the commission.

“Article 168(b) of the Constitution makes provision for removal of a judge of a superior court on account of a breach of the code of conduct prescribed for judges of the superior courts by an Act of Parliament,” she said.

On November 16, Sonko shared a video of a person claiming to be Justice Chitembwe’s brother in a meeting. The person identified as Amana Said Jirani was to take bribes on behalf of the judge in a land dispute that is being investigated by the DCI.

Judge Chitembwe however distanced himself from the allegations saying that the video was manipulated and doctored to fit a particular narrative.

“I have no problem. Let the videos go round because they are edited to fit a particular narrative. Some parts have been left. I knew about the existence of the videos in July and it was just a matter of when they would be out,” he said in an interview with KTN.

The judge further said that the former governor was taking his revenge, over his decision alongside two other judges to approve the swearing in of Anne Kananu as Nairobi governor.
