Nandi senator Samson Cherargei has blamed the ministry of Sports over the deaths that occurred at the Kericho Green Stadium on Mashujaa Day.
In a tweet, the senator expresses his condolences to the families that lost their loved ones in the stampede and noted tgat the ministry of Sports should be held accountable for the deaths.
“My heart goes out to the families and friends who lost their loved ones after stampede at Kericho stadium yesterday. The supervising ministry of sports CS Ababu must held responsible for this unfortunate incident. This is clear pointer of substandard work done by the ministry at the stadium. The incident embarrassed all of us . My apologies to the entire country,” he stated.
The stampede that occurred at the dawn of mashujaa Day at gate C saw 5 people lose their lives.
According to sources, trouble began when a woman who was selling tea at the gate spilt it on fire.
This saw the crowd present panic thinking that it was a teargas that had been lodged at them as they tried to scamper to safety.
13 others who were injured during the incident were rushed to hospital and have since been confirmed to be in stable condition.
President William Ruto also send a comforting message to the families that lost their loved ones in the incident.
“My heart goes out to the families of the victims of the tragedy at the Kericho Green Stadium ahead of the Mashujaa Day celebrations. We extend our deepest condolences and pray for the quick recovery of the injured. Poleni sana,” the head of state said.
