A man was arraigned at the Kibera Law Courts and accused of taking and using household goods belonging to a tenant who had gone upcountry.
According to the charge sheet, the accused identified as Anthony Kusu, a caretaker of some rental houses in Kangemi, took and used Mercy Chebet ’s item’s without her consent.
“On an unknown day between July 2020 and September 2020 at Kangemi in Dagoretti sub-county within Nairobi County, jointly with others not before court broke and entered the dwelling house of Mercy Chebet Too and stole herein assorted household goods as per the attached list all valued at Ksh229,800,” the charge sheet read.
The offence is said to have occurred when Chebet left the city for her rural home and was unable to return due to the Covid 19 containment measures.
Chebet is said to have rented an apartment where Kusu was working as a caretaker before leaving for home.
She was however unable to pay rent for her Kangemi home for some months because of challenges resulting from the pandemic.
Her business in Nairobi also shut down since there was no one to run it.
Kusu together with agents and other suspects who were not in court are said to have broken into Chebet’s house and removed her house items like sufurias, blankets and other household goods.
When Chebet returned to the city, she was shocked to find her belonging’s missing.
She reported the matter to the local administration but no action was taken.
She decided to file a report with the police who went to the accused person’s house and recovered the missing items which he was using.
Kusu denied the charges leveled against him and was released on a bond of ksh300,000. The case will be mentioned in October 12.
